In shortVaccines are given on a schedule so protection arrives before the age when each illness is most dangerous. If a date is missed, we can usually catch up.
Every parent of a baby knows the feeling: a card full of dates, a pile of vaccine names that sound like a spelling bee, and a tiny person who is about to get a poke. As a pediatrician in HSR Layout, I want to make this simple. Here is the child vaccination schedule explained in plain words, and why giving vaccines on time really matters.
How do vaccines work?
A vaccine shows the immune system a harmless piece or weakened form of a germ, so that if your child meets the real one, the body already knows how to fight it. Think of it as a fire drill: nobody is in danger, but everyone learns where the exits are.
The big milestones
In India, doctors usually follow the schedule recommended by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP). The details are different for every child, so your doctor will give you exact dates. But the main stops on the journey look like this:
Why on time matters
The schedule is designed so that protection arrives just before the age when a baby is most at risk from each illness. Delays leave gaps. The good news: if you miss a date, please do not worry or skip the visit. In most cases we can simply catch up, and there is no need to restart the series.
What to expect after a vaccine
Common and usually fine
- A little fussiness or sleepiness
- Mild fever for a day or so
- Redness or a small lump where the injection was given
- A bit less appetite
Call us if
- The fever is high or lasts more than 2 days
- The baby is limp, very drowsy or will not feed
- Crying that will not settle for hours
- Swelling that keeps spreading
- Trouble breathing: go to emergency
Keep the vaccination card in a safe place, take a photo of it, and bring it to every visit. It is your child's health passport, and schools and travel often ask for it.
Common questions I hear
- Too many vaccines at once? The combined vaccines are designed and tested to be given together. The immune system handles this very well.
- Can my child be vaccinated with a cold? A mild cold is usually fine. If your child has a fever or is unwell, ask your doctor.
- Optional vaccines? Some vaccines are in addition to the basic schedule. We will explain which ones your child may benefit from.
