Eczema and itchy skin: a practical guide

In shortEczema is a weak skin barrier. Daily moisturising, short lukewarm baths and trigger avoidance control most cases; see a doctor if the skin is weeping or sleep is lost.

Itchy skin is miserable for children, and for the parents who watch them scratch.

Dry, red, itchy patches that come and go, especially on the cheeks, elbows and behind the knees? Chances are your child has eczema, also called atopic dermatitis. It is one of the most common skin conditions in children, and the good news is that with a steady routine, most children get much better.

What is eczema?

In eczema the skin's protective barrier is weaker than normal. It loses moisture easily and lets irritants in, so the skin becomes dry, itchy and inflamed. Itching leads to scratching, scratching damages the skin further, and the cycle continues. Eczema often runs in families with allergies or asthma.

The daily routine that works

1Short lukewarm bath,5 to 10 minutes2Pat dry, never rub3Moisturise withinminutes4Soft cotton clothes
Moisturising every day, even when the skin looks clear, is the heart of eczema care.

Know your triggers

Common triggers are dry weather, harsh soaps and bubble baths, sweat, wool and rough fabrics, dust mites, pets, some foods and infections. Keep a note of what seems to set it off. A Skin Prick Test can help when allergy is suspected, but please do not cut foods out on your own, because that can affect your child's nutrition.

Do's and don'ts

Helps

  • Fragrance-free moisturiser, applied generously
  • Mild, soap-free cleansers
  • Short nails to limit damage from scratching
  • Cool, comfortable room temperature
  • Medicated creams exactly as your doctor advises

Avoid

  • Hot water and long baths
  • Perfumed products and bubble bath
  • Itchy wool or synthetic clothes
  • Using strong steroid creams on your own
  • Scratching: use a cold cloth for relief
Small changes make a big difference.
Doctor's tip

Think of moisturiser like sunscreen: the thick, regular layer is what protects. Use a good amount, and apply it more than once a day.

When to see us

Please see the doctor if the skin is weeping, crusted or has pus, if your child has a fever with the rash, if the itching disturbs sleep or the eczema does not improve with moisturisers. Medicated creams are very helpful, but they should be used in the right strength, for the right time, as advised.
