In shortAsthma is inflamed, sensitive airways. Reliever and controller inhalers, plus trigger avoidance, let most children play and sleep normally.
The word "asthma" makes many parents anxious. I understand. But after years of treating childhood asthma in HSR Layout, I can tell you that most children with asthma live full, active lives once they have the right diagnosis and a clear plan. Let me clear up what asthma is, and bust a few myths.
What is asthma?
Asthma is a condition in which the small airways of the lungs become inflamed and extra sensitive. When something irritates them, they swell and tighten, and the child coughs, wheezes or finds it hard to breathe. It often runs in families that also have allergies, eczema or hay fever.
Signs to watch for
- Cough that is worse at night, early morning or with running and laughing
- A whistling sound when breathing out (wheeze)
- Fast breathing or tightness in the chest
- Coughing that follows every cold
Common triggers
Triggers differ from child to child. The usual suspects are viral colds, dust mites, pollen, smoke and incense, strong smells, cold air, exercise and pets. A Skin Prick Test can help find the allergens behind your child's symptoms.
The two kinds of medicine
Doctors usually think of asthma medicines as relievers, which open the airways quickly during symptoms, and controllers, taken regularly to calm the inflammation and prevent attacks. Inhalers deliver the medicine straight to the lungs, so the dose is tiny and the effect is quick. For children, an inhaler is best used with a spacer.
Myths and facts
Ask for a written asthma action plan. It tells you, in plain steps, what to give and when to go to hospital, so you are never guessing at 2 a.m.
When it is an emergency
Go to the nearest emergency department if your child is struggling to breathe, cannot speak in full sentences, has blue or grey lips, or the reliever does not help.
