Blocked nose and nasal allergy

In shortA blocked, itchy or runny nose that keeps coming back is often allergic rhinitis. Reducing triggers, saline rinses with boiled-cooled water and the right sprays help.

A nose that is always blocked, itchy or running may be an allergy, not a cold.

Sneezing fits first thing in the morning, an itchy nose, a blocked nose that never quite clears, and constant sniffing. If this sounds like you or your child, it may be allergic rhinitis, or nasal allergy. It affects people of all ages and is far more than a minor nuisance: it disturbs sleep, concentration and school or work. The good news is that it is very treatable.

What is happening in the nose?

When someone with an allergy breathes in dust mites, pollen, mould or pet dander, the lining of the nose reacts as though it were under attack. It swells, produces mucus and itches. That is why the nose runs, blocks and sneezes. Unlike a cold, it can last for weeks or all year round.

What actually helps?

  • Reduce triggers: wash bedding weekly in hot water, keep soft toys out of the bed, fix damp walls, and keep windows closed on high-pollen days
  • Saline rinses: they wash away allergens and mucus
  • Medicines: antihistamines or nasal steroid sprays, used correctly and as advised by your doctor
  • Allergy testing and immunotherapy: for selected patients whose symptoms continue

How to rinse the nose safely

1Wash your hands, usea clean bottle2Mix with boiled andcooled or distilledwater3Lean over the sink, head slightly tilted4Rinse gently eachside, then clean thebottle
Never use plain tap water. Always use water that has been boiled and cooled, or distilled water.
Doctor's tip

Nasal steroid sprays work best when used every day, not only on bad days. Aim the nozzle slightly outwards, away from the middle wall of the nose. Please use them as your doctor advises.

Why treatment matters

An ignored nasal allergy can lead to repeated sinus infections, snoring, mouth breathing, poor sleep and ear problems, and it can worsen asthma. If your nose has been blocked for more than a few weeks, a proper ENT examination will find the cause, including a deviated septum or polyps, and match the treatment to it.
